In world news…

It’s not often that Him and Her are topical on this blog.  Important news items don’t tend to fit well between posts about getting bonus air miles when you buy booze and complaints from a 4* all-inclusive resort in Cuba.  This is one post that breaks the mold though.

There’s a lot going on in the middle east right now.  Citizens are up in arms against their country’s leaders all over.  Libya being the biggest clusterstuff of retaliation.  And back a few years ago, there was another Libyan leader who had trouble giving up his power…

That was the son of Muammar Gaddafi.  He was also the captain of the Libyan national soccer team when they played Canada in Tripoli way back in 2003.  The story goes is that Libya was having trouble enticing teams to play them in Libya, something to do with human rights issues or something else.  So Gaddafi decides to pay the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) an insane appearance fee for the Canadian men’s national team to play a friendly in Libya.  But, unlike Nelly Furtado and Beyonce, I don’t think that the CSA ever donated the money to charity…

The captain of the team (Gaddafi’s son) was so grateful that the Canadians played Libya, that he personally shook the hand of every Canadian player who was on the pitch at the time of his substitution.  And coach and trainer and water boy on the sideline for good measure.

On a positive note, Canada won the game 4-2.
